A.R.T. evolution’s semi-annual Meet the Artist event took place on Thursday, February 23, at the corporate offices of BRAND Ltd., a full service integrated marketing firm. A Winter Showcase featured the work of former fashion designer turned artist, Marcia Friedman.

The Artist with Mist of Due and Geraniums in Blue
Throughout an extensive career that began in the fashion industry before evolving into photography and mixed media, Friedman, a petite blonde with big talent, created unique alterations of images which made them in turn, her own original compositions.
As a fashion designer (she studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles) she has been featured in leading magazines and newspapers such as Vogue, Bazaar, W, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, and the New York Times Magazine.

Photography was a natural evolution for Friedman and in the late 90’s she began to manipulate images, layering on variations to make the finished product an altered piece, reborn in her own distinct vision.
Not content to confine herself to one genre or style, Friedman categorizes her work as impressionist, flowing abstract, stark art, or pointillism. Examples at the Winter Showcase included Streak of Red in Sea of Yellow (abstract) and Before the Storm (stark art).

Her pieces can burst with color or coalesce into subdued monochromatic hues. There is a grace and flow to her abstract images that contrast sharply with the straight lines of her stark art creations, linear landscapes that are frequently on dramatic black backgrounds.

Then there are the impressionist pieces that depict gardens, serene still life compositions, or the lovely ordinariness of a tranquil bedroom. In Friedman’s hands, it’s a boudoir, inviting in its languorous fabrics and promise of elegant respite.

Her artwork has been shown in galleries, museums, and foundation exhibits around the United States, and she has also been featured in major art magazines including Art Business News and Décor. Additionally, Friedman has been selected from artists around the world to exhibit in the 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011 Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy.

With a clientele that includes the Atlantis Resort/Bahamas, Princess Cruise, and McGraw Hill Publishers, Friedman’s work is “going places” whether by invitation or demand.
The artist donated 25% of her sales to the Odyssey Scholarship Program for Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts students. Her work will be on display at BRAND Ltd. (8860 W. Sunset, Suite 200) through the first quarter of 2012.
