Henderson Hosts 2011 Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3

For the first time in history, the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 was held in the City of Henderson. Approximately 1,700 of the best international and domestic athletes from across the globe ranging from 18-75 years old and representing 49 states and 50 countries, competed in the triathlon on Sunday, September 11. After five years in Clearwater, Florida, the triathlon was moved to the premier city not only for its beautiful, year-round weather, but for its long-standing reputation as the best place to host a triathlon, as well as the top location for triathletes to compete on the most challenging race course in North America.

After diving into the waters of Lake Las Vegas for a 1.2-mile swim, more than 1,800 of the will hit the pavement, cycling 56 miles through Lake Mead Recreation Area and the scenic avenues of Henderson, completing the race with a 13.1-mile run to the finish line at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Top professionals, Craig Alexander and Melissa Rollison, both from Australia, celebrated victories, crossing the finish line at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway, at the inaugural race in 3:54:48 and 4:30:55, respectively.

With this win, Alexander captured his second World Championship 70.3, while Rollison marked it as her first, just one year after entering her first 70.3 distance race. USA's Chris Lieto came in second, crossing the finish line in 3:58:03. Coming in second for women was Karin Thuerig of Switzerland at 4:26:52 and finishing third was USA's Linsey Corbin at 4:29:25.

One of more than 50 Ironman 70.3 events worldwide, the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Henderson proved to be a challenging race course for athletes. The triathlon, which moved from Clearwater, Florida, featured a 1.2-mile swim in Lake Las Vegas, 56-mile bike course, reaching multiple climbs up to 9,700 feet, throughout Lake Mead National Recreation Area and a 13.1-mile run, boasting an additional 2,000 feet elevation gain, through Henderson’s beautiful communities. Racers completed their trek with a finish line celebration at the Henderson Pavilion.

The Marine Corps Ironman World Championship will return to Henderson next September as part of a five-year contract with the World Triathlon Union.
