DownBeat Magazine, host of the annual DownBeat Awards – considered the most prestigious music honors nationally in the field of jazz education – recently recognized UNLV Jazz Ensemble I as one of the nation’s best for Graduate College Large Ensemble Outstanding Performance, sharing the honor with the University of Miami Studio Jazz Band. The awards, officially known as the “Student Music Awards,” were announced in DownBeat’s June edition, released April 27 and presented in 15 categories and five separate divisions (junior high, high school, performing high school, college and graduate college).

Comedy-magician Mac King celebrated 10 years of laughter and magic with the “Mac King Comedy Magic Show” at Harrah’s Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 4. In honor of this momentous occasion, Mayor Goodman declared May 4 “Mac King Day” in Las Vegas and Rick Mazer, President of Harrah’s Las Vegas presented King with a cake.

Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana partnered with local nonprofit, Project Sole to collect used, durable footwear at his shows at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino from April 21 through May 2. The collaborative effort gathered nearly 400 pairs of shoes, which will aid local nonprofits and schools in need as well as those in Chile after the recent devastating earthquake. Volunteers and staff from Project Sole were onsite at The Joint to collect the gently used shoes before each performance of Supernatural Santana: A Trip Through the Hits. As a “thank you” to those who donated, fashionable shoe brands Carlos by Carlos Santana and Unity by Carlos Santana offered a 20 percent discount on their merchandise.

The M Resort’s innovative new cooking show, “Martini Time with Chef Tina Martini”  will air on Cox 96 in Southern Nevada three times a day, two days a week beginning Monday, May 10. The show will reach more than 400,000 households. Shows will air Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Entertainment mogul David Saxe has acquired the $34 million, 435 seat theater formerly occupied by Steve Wyrick in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and renamed it the Saxe Theater. The 22,000 square-foot entertainment facility will debut  in June and will be home to the first major talent-driven Las Vegas stage production in more than a decade.

Twin Creeks Steakhouse at Silverton Casino Lodge kicks off new Happy Hour on Thursday, May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  In addition to nightly specials on drinks and small plate (tapas) items Twin Creeks has added a weekly Thursday night performance by local musician Jeremy Cornwell, who blends original material and unique cover songs to deliver a high-energy performance.

The Gibson Library, currently located on Water Street in Downtown Henderson, will close its doors on Saturday, May 15 in order to pack up and re-locate to a newly constructed building at 100 W. Lake Mead Pkwy., near Boulder Hwy. The new Gibson Library is expected to open by July 1, but tours for the media of the new location will be available by mid-June.

Angelica Bridges, Playboy model,former star of “Baywatch,” and star of the topless revue, Fantasy, will host  a swimwear fashion show at Eva Longoria Parker’s Eve Nightclub Saturday, May 15. Laguna Beach Jeans Company,  the go-to brand for Hollywood A-listers including Beyonce, Kellan Lutz and Karina Smirnoff will debut its 2010 swimwear line featuring 14 new fashions modeled by the stunning cast of the Las Vegas Strip’s hottest adult revue, FANTASY.

On Saturday, May 15  magician Lance Burton will entertain over 500 volunteers from all three of the St. Rose Dominican Hospitals at the M Resort at their Volunteer Appreciation Event.  After being served a mid-day lunch the audience will enjoy the magic of  the Monte Carlo headliner.

To celebrate the first anniversary of its opening, The Green Valley Library will host several events on Saturday, May 15, and Saturday, May 22. The first event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 and will feature the Horse Creek Inter-Tribal Dancers performing in the rotunda of the Green Valley Library – located at 2797 N. Green Valley Pkwy., on the corner of Sunset Road. The second event, featuring the U.S. Buffalo Soldiers 9th and 10th Horse Cavalry, will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 22.  Troopers will be on hand in full dress uniform in the library rotunda to interact with the public and give an overview and history of this historic fighting unit.  They will also bring a live horse or two, which will be on parade in front of the building for the public to see.

Nevada Pops, under the direction of Dr. Richard McGee, will present “Guy Movies,” on Saturday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. at UNLV’s Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall.   The concert will feature music from “Rocky,”  “Star Trek,” “Apocalypse Now,” “The Hunt for Red October,” and “Star Wars,” among others.  Because the concert is taking place on Armed Forces Day, a salute to the country’s armed forces will also be included in the program. Las Vegas’ Desert Chorale will join the Pops for several pieces throughout the evening. Tickets are $18 for adults, and $14 for students, seniors and military.  Children under 5 are free.  A video introduction to “Guy Movies” and program notes are available at 

Pam Matteson and Bruce Mickelson are newest guest comedians joining Sammy Shore in “Sammy Shore’s Barking Mad Comedy Jam” at Marilyn’s Lounge at the Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel on May 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.

The Art of Peter Max Gallery, located on the Terrace Level in The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, will host a gallery exhibition with Pop Art Icon Peter Max on Saturday, May 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. to commemorate Memorial Day. Max will unveil his newest original painting: an acrylic on canvas, full-bodied Liberty painting measuring six-feet tall that will be on display and available for purchase exclusively at the Las Vegas gallery.  During the exhibition, purchasers will have the opportunity to meet Max who will inscribe a priceless dedication and drawing on the back of each painting acquired at the Gallery during the event or anytime throughout the month of May.

Legendary rock and roll band Huey Lewis and the News will perform in the spectacular Villaggio Del Sole outdoor concert venue at the M Resort Spa Casino on Saturday, May 29 at 9 p.m. Ticket prices are $72.50, $62 and $51.50 all inclusive for reserved seating. General admission tickets are also available for $39.95 all inclusive.

Jerry Herbst, the 71-year-old owner, CEO/Pres. of Terrible Herbst Corp. which runs gasoline stations, retail operations and casinos in Southern Nevada, is selling his Newport Beach, Calif., home for $31.75 million. Herbst bought the six-bedroom residence for $35 million in 2008 from Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage who paid $25 million for the property in 2005.

Dressed in a striking black-and-white retro printed dress, Carmen waved to the thousands of screaming fans, showing off her stunning black diamond engagement ring from rocker fiancé Rob Patterson. The birthday celebration ignited with the arrival of the four-tier turquoise and cream birthday cake encrusted with rocker-chic silver roses.

Wednesday May 5...

All 51 Miss USA contestants spent the afternoon at Garden of the Gods pool oasis  at Caesars Palace.  They were treated by an incredible lunch prepared just for them by Celebrity Chef Bradley Ogden.  Afterward, the contestants cooled off by taking a dip and tossing beach balls in the Neptune Pool at Garden of the Gods, the new 5-acre oasis with eight distinct pools, 18ft waterfall and swim-up blackjack.

Jenny McCarthy and her sister and some friends, had dinner at N9NE Steakhouse inside the Palms Casino Resort.  Afterwards  Jenny headed to the Playboy Club and was seen getting very cozy kissing an unknown guy.

Thursday, May 6...

Holly Madison threw a day long 21st birthday party for her assistant and friend Angel Porrino  that started in the afternoon at TAO Beach with a group that included Laura Croft and Josh Strickland, with the celebration documented by a camera crew from “Holly’s World,” Madison’s new show on E!.

Dinner at TAO Asian Bistro was the next stop as a group of ten feted Angel.

After taking the stage for her star role in Peepshow, Holly Josh returned and joined Angel and Laura on the red carpet before heading up to a sky box in the nightclub.  A special five-tiered wizard fairytale themed cake by Gimme Some Sugar was topped with a large “21” to mark the occasion and featured sugar replicas of Holly and Angel in wizard outfits.

Also spotted in the club for Worship Thursday were Billy Baldwin, Chazz Palminteri and Trent Othick as the group commanded a VIP table on the dance floor.

Reigning Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton satisfied her sweet tooth as she unveiled the new, limited edition Miss USA Couture Pop at Sugar Factory at Miracle Mile Shops inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.  Dalton hopped behind the counter to whip up one of Sugar Factory’s mouthwatering milkshakes, and sampled a few of the delicious confections before leaving with a bag brimming with sweet treats.

Holly Madison hosted a beach blanket bikini bash presented by Hpnotiq at TAO Beach . The Peepshow star arrived with friends including Peepshow co-star Josh Strickland, Laura Croft and Angel Porrino.

Friday night Kim Kardashian and Kelly Rowland threw a bachelorette bash at TAO for TV personality La La Vazquez to celebrate her upcoming wedding to Denver Nugget star Carmelo Anthony.  After dinner the women adjourned to a sky box in the nightclub and the crowd roared as DJ Reach announced their arrival. Later in the night La La was surprised with a four tier cake that was topped off with a sweet diamond ring.

Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir along with Doriana Sanchez attended Matt Goss's Caesars Palace show. The Hollywood mom of six started the evening with an intimate dinner with her aunt. Upstairs inside Eve, the reality TV star sipped cocktails and danced in Eve's VIP section, mingling, taking photos with fans and inviting a few guests to her table.

Golfer Anthony Kim, fresh off hand surgery, was spotted  with a group of friends at TAO Beach  for Beatport Beach Party.  Later in the night they went to LAVO Nightclub where DJ Vice was spinning.

Al Harrington of the New York Kicks and Charlotte Bobcat Stephen Jackson were at LAVO with friends and family for a dinner of Italian favorites.
