On Friday, August 5, Caesars Palace Las Vegas celebrated its 50th anniversary - exactly five decades from the day it first opened its doors - with a special birthday pool party with nearly 3,000 hotel and special guests hosted by award-winning chef Gordon Ramsay at the Garden of The Gods Pool Oasis.

After leading the guests in a champagne toast and a celebratory slicing of the custom five-tier birthday cake complete with sparklers, world-famous chef Gordon Ramsay introduced one of the night’s highlights, a dramatic horse-drawn chariot entrance by Caesar himself. Embracing the Roman and Greek origins of the summer games, a ceremonial torch run followed with Ramsay ultimately lighting the impressive cauldron.

The College of Southern Nevada Department of Fine Arts will host an exhibition of print work, video and installation art by ELLIE HONL, an independent artist and secretary of the Mid America Print Council who is currently based in the San Francisco Bay area, and TARYN McMAHON, a printmaker and Assistant Professor of Art at Kent University, Ohio. "UNSETTLED TERRAIN: NEW WORK BY ELLIE HONL AND TARYN McMAHON" will begin Friday, August 12, and will run through Saturday, September 24, 2016. Honl’s artwork focuses around the human desire to find stability in the unsteady present and unpredictable future. Informed by psychological theories of coping strategies, her lifelong interests in architecture, and the genre of science fiction, her artwork tries to understand why things are the way they are and strives to find logic in the random. Through a multidisciplinary approach, she creates prints, objects, and moving images that oscillate between rational and irrational, organized and disordered.
Speaking of her own work McMahon says, “My work uses images of patterned botanicals to investigate sites and histories, highlighting the complicated construction of an idea of “nature”. The resulting installations are responsive to the architecture of their site, changing viewers’ ambulation through the space and creating a bodily experience. My work develops a visual vocabulary that mashes up the languages of 17th -18th century botanical engravings, space age cartoons, and nature documentaries. Like a DJ spinning sounds culled from disparate sources, I endlessly remix forms from botanical engravings, my own drawings, and other popular culture.”
Ms. Honl and Professor McMahon will participate in a Gallery Talk and Artist Reception on Thursday, September 8, at 4 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery.
