Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant and Bar Opens in Town Square

It originated in Springfield, Missouri on July 4, 2006, and now it’s here in Las Vegas. The newest Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant and Bar in Town Square is the franchise’s first west coast location, and it offers up a whole lot of family-friendly food, tradition, sports, and…whiskey! Located adjacent to the Guitar Center, it is in a corner spot full of windows that can open (floor to ceiling) when the weather permits for pleasing blend of inside/outside ambience. Valet parking is available, but there is plenty of free parking in the huge surrounding lots.

The décor is wood, mirror, and glass, with an occasional chandelier amid the large space that has smaller rooms for private parties in the back. There are separate spaces for the whiskey bar and the sports bar. Glass bottles cover a large mirrored shelf behind the bar, over 150 different brands of bourbon, rye and scotch in various shades of amber, made jewel-like when the light hits them.

Wooden tables, chandeliers, and whiskey casks on the ceiling.

Fun fact: Whiskey is spelled with an extra “e” here in the U.S. and Ireland, but without the “e” (whisky) in Scotland, Japan, and Canada. Two exceptions are the American-made Maker’s Mark and Old Forester, just in case you were wondering. Whiskeys are available on tap or by the flight starting at $18.

Executive chef Ralph Robinette’s menu of American classics on the night your humble correspondent visited consisted of Buffalo Chicken Wontons with Bleu Cheese Crumbles, Boom Boom Shrimp in a sweet and spicy sauce, and Southwest Egg Rolls, stuffed with chicken, onions, cilantro and bell peppers and served with Southwestern Ranch for dipping.
A Triple Dip tortilla chip platter contained bowls of white queso spinach dip, buffalo chicken dip (this fills the wontons as well) and fresh salsa. BW American Sliders with cheese and pickles are served with a special sauce and are bigger than usual. They have “big” in the title after all.

A Red, White, and Bleu Burger did not skimp on the bleu cheese. Lemon Pepper Chicken arrived on a bed of rice pilaf with steamed vegetables. Cajun Shrimp Pasta features penne in alfredo sauce, topped by Cajun-spiced shrimp. A New York Strip Steak arrived with a dollop of steak butter, accompanied by loaded mash potatoes and fresh green beans. A Smothered Steak is blanketed in mushrooms, onions, and melted mozzarella. What a way to go.

Classic bone-in wings can be sauced or dry rubbed; available in 16 flavors including Raspberry Inferno, Honey Whiskey BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, Mild, Hot, or Extreme Buffalo, and Aftershock. The Chicken Tenders here are really, really crunchy and served with your choice of dipping sauce. Rest assured that Big Whiskey’s will never run out. Salads, soups, seafood sandwiches and classics like Baby Back Ribs ensure that there’s something for everyone’s taste and heat tolerance.

Gluten-friendly and vegan items, include the Impossible Burger (on a vegan pretzel bun with vegan American cheese) Impossible Bolognese (corn rice pasta, ground Impossible Burger, and spicy marinara sauce topped with meatless bacon and vegan shredded parmesan) and the Barbecue Bacon Chicken Sandwich (vegan chicken filet with vegan bacon, topped with Big Whiskey’s barbecue sauce on a vegan pretzel bun).

Guests can drink a Vegas-inspired dessert with the Fleury Float, (Jim Beam Black, Jim Beam Vanilla, cold brew, Barq’s Root Beer and vanilla ice cream) in honor of the Vegas Golden Knights, or the Gruden Glory (Jameson, RumChata, Guinness Irish Stout and brewed coffee topped with whipped cream) named for the Oakland Raiders’ head coach.

Whiskys and Whiskeys

A Banana Whiskey Foster (brown butter caramelized bananas, vanilla bean ice cream, nutmeg, and caramel sauce made from locally based Ambros Banana Whiskey) is a sundae served in a martini glass, while the Not Your Grandma’s Pecan Pie comes a la mode with a hint of whiskey. Surprise! The Big Brownie Skillet is decadent but alcohol-free.

There are over 20 beers featured, along with red, white, and house wines. Classic cocktails (Garden Bloody Mary, Singapore Sling, Moscow Mule, Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour) and the only-in-Vegas Golden Knightarita (Sauza Gold Triple Sec, Agave Nectar and Fresh Lime Juice) only add to the enormous variety of drink creations possible at Big Whiskey’s.

The name Big Whiskey’s is explained on the menu. It’s actually named after a customer who would always tell the bartender, “I’m only going to have one, so make it a big one.” There’s more to it than that, including the quotes that hang on the wall (same customer). You’ll just have to discover the rest when you visit. For further motivation, the daily happy hour is Monday-Friday (3:00-6:00pm) and Sunday through Wednesday (10:00pm-Close) and offers half-off appetizers and $3 off select drinks.

Now, that’s big.
