The Lion King Celebrates 2nd Anniversary at Mandalay Bay

Disney’s THE LION KING at Mandalay Bay celebrated its second anniversary on the Strip on Sunday, May 15.  Since the show’s debut in 2009, THE LION KING has captured the imagination of nearly one million locals and tourists. Following the evening performance, the show’s cast and crew gathered to celebrate the occasion with champagne and a spectacular LION KING cake standing four feet tall and weighing 75 pounds in a magnificent portrayal of Simba’s mask and body.

The chocolate mousse cake was designed by Mandalay Bay’s Executive Pastry Chef Vincent Pilon with Cake Decorator Brittany Harris and featured a mask made of Rice Krispies Treats covered in modeling chocolate, and a lion’s mane constructed with dried, edible grass. Pilon and Harris worked all week creating the cake sculpture, molding each of its thousand-plus edible chocolate beads on the corset by hand. For the non-chocolate enthusiasts, mini vanilla cakes with roasted pineapple filling were constructed to look like Pride Rock. The cast and crew took turns taking pictures with the outstanding cake and toasted to a successful two years on the Strip.

In celebration of its second year on the Strip, THE LION KING has introduced its first locals’ ticket offer just for children. For weekend matinee performances in the month of May, each adult purchasing a full-price ticket can purchase two child tickets for only $15. This special offer for local families is a way for THE LION KING to thank the Las Vegas community for its support since the show’s May 2009 debut.

Tickets can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay Box Office or the MGM Resorts Call Center at 877-632-7000. Mention “ROAR” for purchase. The ticket offer is available for the 4 p.m. performance of THE LION KING every Saturday and Sunday in the month of May with a valid Nevada ID. Children must be under the age of 17; maximum two child tickets per one adult ticket. Recommended viewing age for THE LION KING is six years and older.
