I am deeply saddened to report the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Polly Peluso, who was a longtime Las Vegas entertainment columnist and film critic. Polly, still beautiful in her senior years, was in her late 80's when she died on July 16 in Las Vegas as the result of numerous health issues.

Other notable Las Vegas residents who passed away recently include:

Former Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn died Thursday morning, July 22 after falling off the roof of his Las Vegas home. He was 73 years old. 

Marie Marotta Little, the 44 year old wife of impressionist, Rich Little, died on Thursday, July 15th, following a brief illness.

Elvis, the undisputed “King of Rock and Roll” is no longer with us, but had he lived, he would have turned 75 this year.  In celebration of his life and musical legacy,  Las Vegas was the setting for the following two events that showcased an array of Elvis tribute artists.

Las Vegas Hilton Hosts “Heart of the King Fest”

Elvis fans and some of the best “Elvis”  tribute artists from all over the world gathered at the Las Vegas Hilton from July 14 -17 for the “Heart of the King Fest”,  a fans festival, convention and special closing night concert.

Fremont Street Experience hosts the Ultimate Elvis Weekend

On Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24 as part of the “Summer of the ’70s” celebration, Fremont Street Experience hosted the EPE (Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.) - sanctioned preliminary round of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, which for the first time was held in Las Vegas.

EVENING CALL, a new walk-up bar, offering a wide variety of frozen drinks, an eye-opening blend of Irish Crème and Cappuccino as well as more traditional options such as margaritas and piña coladas, has opened in the lobby at the Luxor.

The performance of Tommy James & The Shondells with Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals at Cannery Casino & Hotel on Saturday, August 28 at 8 pm has been CANCELLED.

The  first ever REGGAE FEST will take place at The Palms Pool & Bungalows as part of the Cruzan Campfire Concert Series.  Local reggae favorites, Lady Reiko and the Sin City Prophets, ForTwentyDaze, HaleAmanO and One Pin Short are set to perform Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 9:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $10 for general admission and $30 for a VIP ticket that allows guests access into a special viewing area includes a complimentary Cruzan cocktail.

Local and national sports and entertainment celebrities along with ESPN Radio 1100 have confirmed their participation to help host “The Longest Radio Show Ever” on July 30 to benefit THE CARING PLACE, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. The radio show will be broadcast from the Palms Casino and Resort for 24 hours beginning at 10 a.m. on July 30 and feature a myriad of celebrity hosts including Hall of Fame Showtime Boxing Announcer Al Bernstein, Hall of Fame Trainer and HBO Boxing Analyst Emanuel Steward, and National CBS Sportscaster Gus Johnson. Master Magician Lance Burton as well as Entertainers George Wallace and Clint Holmes will also host portions of the broadcast.

Saturday, July 31, FIRST Food and Bar inside the Shoppes at the Palazzo is hosting the first-ever Wing Throwdown which finds their top three ranked chefs creating, cooking and serving their best wing recipe. Visiting patrons from 10 p.m. – 11:30 p.m that night are encouraged to head to the tasting area, try out the wings and vote for their favorite. Diners can also sign up for the ultimate wing eating contest (limited to first 10 competitors). Winner of the wing eating competition will win a $100 FIRST Food & Bar gift card as well as a goodie bag. There will be drink specials during this event and a reverse happy hour begins at 11 p.m.  An after party will take place from midnight to 1 a.m  with open sponsored bar by Stoli White Pomagranik and specials from Wirtz Beverage Coors.

SAMMY HAGAR is set to host a pre-concert kick off at his Las Vegas-based Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops inside Planet Hollywood on Friday, July 30. DKMS/, together with THE LION KING and Disney Theatrical Productions are organizing a local bone marrow drive in the Mandalay Bay Theatre Lobby on Tuesday, August 3 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. for  11-year-old Shannon Tavarez, who plays Young Nala in the Las Vegas’ production of THE LION KING. Recently diagnosed with acute leukemia, Shannon, is fighting for her life. A bone marrow transplant from a stranger may be her only chance at survival. DKMS, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world, has joined the effort to raise awareness and help Shannon in her battle against cancer. CHUCK NEGRON former lead singer of Three Dog Night and legendary jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears will perform in concert in The Club at Cannery Casino & Hotel on Saturday, August 7 at 8 p.m.  Tickets are available now in four levels: Table $79.95, Gold $39.95, Prime $24.95 and Reserved $14.95.

The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas hosts their third annual food festival event, CARNIVAL OF CUISINE on Saturday, August 7 from 1pm-4pm in The Venetian Ballroom. Las Vegas residents William Waldrop and Robert Williamson will present an afternoon concert at the Clark County Flamingo Library Theater on August 8 at 1:30 PM, with a silent auction and reception beginning at 12 PM.  The concert is presented by SinCityQSocials, Las Vegas’ Premiere LGBT Social Network, and will utilize actors and musicians from Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular. Jeremih started his birthday celebration a few days early by hosting Worship Thursday at  TAO. The singer, who turned 23 on Saturday, commanded a VIP table with friends,and then thanked the crowd for coming out to his birthday party by surprising them with an impromptu performance.

Hip Hop artist Flo Rida rocked a packed house at the Palms Pool & Bungalows part of the Cruzan Campfire Concert series on Thursday night. Flavor Flav got on stage with Flo Rida and they picked girls out of the crowd to dance on stage for Flo Rida’s smash hit song "Low".

Rick Harrison of the hit reality TV show “Pawn Stars” had lunch at Rao’s inside Caesars Palace with a couple who who placed a winning bid on the lunch in a live auction on Tuesday. The auction was part of the National Pawnbroker’s Association’s convention taking place at Caesars Palace where Harrison was presented the Pawnbroker of the Year award. The package went for $5000 and included lunch with Harrison at Rao’s and a Mickey Mouse phone that was featured on “Pawn Stars.”

At TAO, Matt “The Hammer” Hamill was spotted dining at the Asian bistro.  The athlete, who is the only deaf person to become a professional MMA fighter, was very gracious with the many fans who stopped by throughout his meal.

Friday afternoon, July 23 Khloe Kardashian and husband Lamar Odom joined Rob Kardashian poolside at Encore Beach Club. Rob arrived at the venue at about 3:30 pm with a group of ten friends and Khloe arrived about 20 minutes later. After grabbing a quick sandwich at Encore’s Society Café, Odom joined them as well.

New Miami Heat star LeBron James along with Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets also partied at TAO Beach with a ground of twelve friends, while in the next cabana over fellow NBA star Shawn Marion was spotted enjoying the day with Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child who was celebrating her 30th birthday.

Friday night...

LeBron James, who recently signed with the Miami Heat, celebrated at LAVO with Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets, San Diego Charger Shaun Phillips, Atlanta Hawk Josh Smith, Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies, Boston Celtic Rajon Rondo and Larry Hughes of the Charlotte Bobcats. After dinner LeBron and friends took over VIP tables on the dance floor in the nightclub where they danced and partied fueled by Perrier Jouet Rose Champagne, Patron Tequila and vodka.  LeBron was presented with a cake from Gimme Some Sugar, a replica of his new Miami Heat number six jersey.  Miami Heat teammate Dwayne Wade joined the party after hitting TAO earlier in the night and Denver Nugget Chauncy Billups was spotted enjoying the night with his fellow NBA stars.

Other Sports stars and celebrities spotted at TAO were Milwaukee Buck Drew Gooden, Jason Maxiell of the Detroit Pistons and his wife Brandy, actor Mekhi Phifer, Omarosa from The Apprentice and model Claudia Jordan from The Celebrity Apprentice.  Jill Marie Jones from the TV series Girlfriends, singer LaToya Luckett and True Blood’s Natasha Alam also walked the red carpet before hitting the club.  Bob Guiney from The Bachelor was joined by poker stars and Amazing Race contestants Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho, and Joe Reitman was spotted enjoying the party.

REO Speedwagon hosted their After-Concert Party inside Rok Vegas Nightclub at New York-New York Hotel & Casino. The  rock band, which consists of members Dave Amato, Kevin Cronin, Neal Doughty, Bruce Hall, and Bryan Hitt, performed live in concert, along with Pat Benatar, at the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV at 7 p.m.

Upon arriving shortly after midnight, the band hit the red carpet for a few photos, along with Illusionist Criss Angel and Comedian Carrot Top, and then headed inside Rok where they were taken to a swank VIP table that overlooked the entire nightclub.

Cesar Millan of the hit National Geographic TV show “The Dog Whisperer” attended the 7 p.m. performance of Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular at The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino.

Kevin Jonas of pop-rock brother trio The Jonas Brothers, entertained at The Bank.Kevin, a newlywed, was in town with his wife to enjoy a weekend getaway with two other couples.

Tess Taylor from E!’s “Pretty Wild” came to JET to host and model in a Syrup Swimwear Fashion show.

Joseph Simmons, better known as Rev Run, performed at Palms Pool & Bungalows inside Palms Casino Resort.  Rev Run  entertained the crowd and performed at the pool. His daughters,  Vanessa and Angela Simmons, known for  starring in MTV’s reality show Run's House  and its spin-off show Daddy's Girls, came to support their dad.Also at the pool was DeSean Jackson, wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles and Shawn Marion,  basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks. In addition, Nick Cannon, actor, comedian, rapper and television personality stopped by with eight friends and partied in a cabana.

At  N9NE Steakhouse,  Mike Bibby,  point guard for the  Atlanta Hawks came in with a party of 20 people around 8 p.m.   After a long day at the pool, Rev Run came in for dinner with a friend around 8 p.m.  Glen Davis, basketball player for Boston Celtics, arrived with a party of 10 people around 11:30 p.m.

Saturday July 24...

Whitney Port, the star of MTV's "The City," spent the afternoon at the sweetest spot on the Strip - Sugar Factory at Miracle Mile Shops inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Port is in town to celebrate the birthday of her sister Paige, and selected Sugar Factory's colossal "Pretty in Pink" gift basket to surprise her with at the store.

After partying at LAVO on Friday, LeBron James continued his weekend long Vegas celebration TAO Beach and TAO.  King James was joined in the grand cabana by a group of friends including new Miami Heat teammate Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets.   Nearby former NBA player Alan Henderson and Glen Davis from the Boston Celtics also took in the sun and the scene. 

Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child returned for a second day at TAO Beach and was later spotted dining at LAVO with a group of friends before hitting TAO Nightclub where LeBron James was hosting for the night.

At LAVO, Julia Jones, Tinsel Korey and Alex Meraz from the Twilight Wolfpack hosted at the nightclub.  Actor Ethan Embry and his wife Sunny also joined the group.

Also spotted in the nightclub at LAVO was Rafer Alston.  The NBA free agent was celebrating his 34th birthday with Grey Goose cocktails and the occasion shot of Patron.

Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers and his wife Danielle partied at Tryst Nightclub inside of Wynn Las Vegas. The couple was joined by a group of their closest friends.

Basketball all-stars took over sister club, XS inside of Encore Las Vegas, for a final NBA Summer League bash. Spotted partying at the infamous mega club was Lamar Odom of the Los Angeles Lakers along with his wife Khloe Kardashian, Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, OJ Mayo of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers. Rapper WALE was also in the house and decided to take over the club by grabbing the microphone and wishing farewell to the NBA players by performing an impromptu concert as the entire club when wild.

Also at XS was Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat , Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Actor Matthew Perry was spotted with two friends at Surrender Nightclub at Encore Las Vegas.

Outside linebacker for the Houston Texans, Brian Cushing dined at N9NE Steakhouse.  with a lady friend at 6 p.m.   Also at the steakhouse was Drew Gooden, basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks and Shawn Marion, basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks.. In addition,  Mike Bibby, point guard for the Atlanta Hawks  came in to dine with a group of 20 around 7:15 p.m. and Pete Rose, former major league baseball player and manager stopped by with a friend at 8:15 p.m.

Over at Moon Nightclub, Kevin Durant,  basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder came to party with 20 friends.  After dinner at N9NE Steakhouse, Shawn Marion  and his 14 friends popped by to party. Also at the club was actor, Mekhi Phifer with a friend. Rapper, Wale also came in with seven friends.

In the afternoon,  Nove Italiano hosted High Society where NBA player Shawn Marion enjoyed the scene with two friends.

At night, Sports stars converged on LAVO to check out DJ Vice.  LeBron James arrived with a large group including Damon Jones of the Milwaukee Bucks. 
At the next table over NBA pro Lamar Odom of the LA Lakers was with brother-in-law Rob Kardashian and a group of friends.

Reality star Rob Kardashian and Lamar Odom continued their boys night out in fabulous Las Vegas stopping in for a bite at dining destination, Serendipity 3 at Caesars Palace.

Also commanding a dance floor table was Larry Johnson from the Washington Redskins.

Playmate Laura Croft from the E! show Holly’s World was spotted checking out the club with a group of girlfriends.
