Local Dignitaries On Hand at the Unveiling of Golden Gate Hotel & Casino's Grand Expansion

Las Vegas’ original hotel, Golden Gate Hotel & Casino officially unveiled its new casino expansion during a champagne-filled ceremony on Friday morning, September 1.

CEO Derek Stevens, his brother and co-owner Greg Stevens and Mayor Carolyn Goodman welcomed guests to celebrate the additions to the enhanced Downtown Las Vegas property, which now features a completely reimagined façade on Fremont Street Experience; a majestic grand entrance; a new 5,000-square-foot casino floor; a rewards center for its loyalty program, Club 1906; and a 20-foot extension to its outdoor bar, One Bar at One Fremont Street.

“Expanding Golden Gate is just another step in our plans for Downtown Las Vegas,” said Derek Stevens. “We know the additions will not only help continue the historic tradition of the property itself, but will contribute to the lively Downtown atmosphere Fremont Street has become known for. The team we have built and the vision we have developed for Golden Gate and Fremont Street will allow this neighborhood to continue to flourish. We are really excited for what’s to come at Golden Gate and what it means for the thousands of visitors we host every day.”

Mayor Goodman, who has been an avid proponent in the redevelopment of Downtown Las Vegas, also took the time to say a few words during the press conference. “Derek and Greg have put their heart and souls into this project. People who love high-end entertainment can come downtown and always have a great time at Golden Gate.”

After the speeches were made, champagne flutes were passed around to the excited crowd. Derek Stevens raised his glass to toast to Golden Gate and the new era to follow, whic includes a future neighbor for the 111-year-old property, as the Stevens brothers are currently developing a highly anticipated resort at 18th Fremont.

Derek Stevens then invited special guests, Las Vegas Council members Ricki Y. Barlow, Bob Coffin and Michele Fiore, to participate in a ribbon cutting to officially kick off the completed expansion. As a special treat, Las Vegas locals and longtime casino merchandise collectors Christine and Sheldon Smith were the first guests to enter the renovated property, as they have not missed a Las Vegas casino opening since moving to the city in 2008.

Also on hand for the festivities was President & CEO of Fremont Street Experience, Patrick Hughes, and Chairman of Fremont Street Experience and former President of Golden Gate, Mark Brandenburg, whose family founded the property. The expansion marks Golden Gate’s second major update in more than 50 years – the first being the addition of a five-story luxury hotel tower, new lobby and exterior in 2012.
