More Than 100 Local Educators Experience National Geographic Exhibition at The Venetian

Tuesday night, April 9, more than 100 educators visited 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic in Imagine Exhibitions Gallery at The Venetian for a special event hosted by National Geographic Learning, part of Cenage Learning. The evening served as a thank you to local teachers for their contributions to the educational community and demonstrated how they can incorporate National Geographic’s stunning photography into their curriculums.

While the teachers mingled and enjoyed complimentary hors d'oeuvres, they were treated to a free preview of National Geographic’s latest learning materials. These materials bring learning to life and can help educators achieve their 21st century curriculum goals in science, social studies, technology, English language arts and English language development. Some of the images in 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic are featured in these materials, so many of the educators expressed interest in making the gallery a future field trip destination.

50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic will run for a limited engagement. The exhibition is open daily from 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., last ticket sold at 6 p.m. Ticket prices are as follows: General admission $16; students with a valid ID, Nevada residents, military and seniors $13; children 12 and under enjoy free admission when accompanied by a paying adult. Taxes and fees not included.

Ben & Jerry's 35th Annual "Free Cone Day" Raises More Than $2,000 for Charity by Serving Up More Than 6,300 Scoops!

Ben & Jerry’s 35th Annual “Free Cone Day,” held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the Scoop Shops located in the District at Green Valley Ranch and Sunset Station Hotel & Casino was a great success, giving away more than 6,300 free cones! Each year, the Henderson shops enlist the help of local celebrities to scoop ice cream while supporting local children’s charities, and this year, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children raised more than $2,000 over the course of the day’s event at both stores.

Celebrities that lent their support in The District at Green Valley Ranch Scoop Shop were Jan Rouven, Master Illusionist,  Lady G and Jeff G from Hot 97.5’s Morning Show, Sam Riddle, Whitney and Tiffany from X Burlesque, John and Gavin from Chippendales, The Revolver Girls, BMX pro Ricardo Laguna, Claire Sinclair, star of PIN UP! at the Stratosphere, FANTASY’s Tracey and Mariah, comedic magician Mac King and Jeff Civillico.

In addition, the District at Green Valley Ranch location featured a DJ, face painting and a balloon artist and welcomed back GAMES2U, a mobile unit featuring a variety of interactive games and activities.

Fremont East Studios, An All-Media Production Studio, Opens in Downtown Las Vegas

Fremont East Studios, a comprehensive, state-of-the-art production facility offering every aspect of production, from pre-to post, opened on April 9 at 221 Las Vegas Blvd. N. “It’s the studio of every producer’s dreams—a true one-stop shop for all aspects of the media production process,” said Freeman White III, the director of production for Fremont East Studios.

The 9,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility plans to offer educational programs with internships, kids’ classes and equipment training. Based on the principles of founder Mimi Pham, Fremont East Studios aims to follow passion and make a successful connection with the community to promote growth and positivity.

“The goals of Fremont East Studios are not only to be known for outstanding work in all aspects of media creation, but to serve Las Vegas as an educational hub for those interested in learning while helping to grow the community of artists downtown,” said Pham.

Funded by Downtown Project, the downtown Las Vegas revitalization effort being led by Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh, Fremont East Studios is the next venture opening that hopes to tap into the positive force working to change the city of Las Vegas.

“I am excited about the role that Fremont East Studios will have towards contributing to the growth of the local community,” said Hsieh.

The innovative space, former home of government access channel KCLV, received a massive renovation and now includes two sound stages, two control rooms, talent facilities, private and shared production/post-production offices, a media lab/screening room and a fully loaded equipment room allows users to construct work comparable to that of any major production house. Fremont East Studios offers comprehensive production services for a range of projects (commercial, music video, feature, etc.), including development, production operations and logistics, studio lighting, grip and electric, green screen, live streaming, teleporting, multi-cam production (in studio and on location), editing and encoding.

New Weekly “Las Vegas Rocks Variety Show” Debuts at LVH

Entertainer and TV host, Tony Sacca debuted his new weekly Las Vegas Rocks Variety Show on Friday  April 5 at 4 p.m. in the Shimmer Cabaret at the LVH – Las Vegas Hotel & Casino.

The hour-long show will be taped in front of a live audience every Friday at 4 p.m. and air the following day locally at 3 p.m. on Vegas TV Cable 14 as well as regionally and will be broadcast via the Internet.
 
Guests for the first show were world renowned classical guitarist Esteban and his violinist daughter Teresa Joy, who are currently appearing weekly in the Shimmer Cabaret,  “The Phat Pack” starring Bruce Ewing, Ted Keegan and Randal Keith, headliners of their own show at the The Plaza Hotel & Casino, and comedian Anthony Padillo, who currently performs in “Comedy After Dark” in the Shimmer Cabaret at the LVH. Each of the acts performed a number or two before sitting down with Tony for a brief interview.

The Gregg Peterson Band was the guest house band, which will change weekly and highlight some of the best musicians in our community.

PBR Rock Bar Hosts Academy of Country Music Awards Official Kick-Off Celebration

On Thursday evening, April 4, PBR Rock Bar inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino celebrated the Academy of Country Music Awards with the official kick-off bash featuring musical performances.

The celebration began with a performance by country cutie, Jordan Allena, on the hot spot’s Strip-side patio stage. The blonde singer mingled and signed autographs for fans after wowing the crowd with her performance. Former American Idol contestant, Morgan Leigh, was next to rock the stage. After performing, Leigh celebrated with her band and took a ride on the infamous PBR Rock Bar mechanical bull. ACM musician, Ray Scott, ended the night by rocked revelers with hit songs such as: “Gotta Quit Drinkin’” and “Those Jeans.”

Our sincere condolences goes out to the family and friends of PETER JAMES REVEEN, world-renowned stage hypnotist and entertainer, best known as ‘Reveen the Impossiblist’.  He passed away peacefully at his Las Vegas home on April 8, from complications due to diabetes and dementia. He was 77 years old. Reveen was also a successful business manager, and for 20 years was acclaimed illusionist Lance Burton's manager.

Lance Burton released this statement: “Peter Reveen was a giant in the world of Magic. His Illusion shows were lavish and innovative. As a stage Hypnotist he had no peer, he was simply the best in the business. As my Manager for 20 years he was my most trusted advisor. Reveen was my very close friend for 30 years. I am sad today. I will miss him.”

A memorial service is being planned.

The Plaza Hotel & Casino will be the new home of the historic BONKERZ COMEDY CLUB and its cadre of comedy acts beginning April 18. The College of Fine Arts’ Department of Film and the UNLV Short Film Archive are pleased to announce SPRING FLICKS 2013, the annual spring short film festival at UNLV. 
The screenings are free and open to the public.

Spring Flicks is the Cannes Film Festival for UNLV film students and Alumni. Each year, it is THE event filmmakers look forward to in order to show their creative efforts.

The goal of Spring Flicks is to promote the art and importance of the short film and to celebrate the student filmmakers who make them.

The SPRING FLICKS 2013 AWARDS PRESENTATION will be held in CBC-A-106 starting after the final film has been screened. The Fisher Space Pen company is again awarding $3,000 in prize money to UNLV student and Alumni filmmakers.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
AUDIENCE AWARD - Best Picture 
JURY AWARDS - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing and other categories are determined by the Judges.

Awards will also be given to the first and second runner-ups in each category.

On Sunday, April 28, loveable pups in need of forever homes will compete in THE ANIMAL FOUNDATIONS 10th ANNUAL BEST IN SHOW, Las Vegas's most famous dog show held at the Orleans Arena.  The event showcases more than 50 cuddly canine contestants from The Animal Foundation, Nevada's largest animal shelter and pet adoption center, vying for the audience's hearts and homes in an American Kennel Club-style dog show.

For the past ten years, Best In Show has raised crucial dollars that allow The Animal Foundation to operate the largest animal shelter in Nevada while providing services such as adoptions, humane education and a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.

Sunday's Best In Show commences with a pre-show VIP Sponsorship Brunch and silent auction at 11 a.m. At noon, doors to the Orleans Arena open for the vendor fair and for general admission seating to the highly anticipated show at 1 p.m. The 10-year milestone event will feature several exciting acts and personalities:

  • The Animal Foundation's Best In Show Adoption Weekend kicks off on Friday, April 26 for three days of celebrations and special discounts as the organization aims to find forever homes for 200 dogs and cats.
  •  The Animal Foundation will offer $50 off all dogs two years and older and all cats one year and older at the Campus Adoption Center (655 N. Mojave Road, Las Vegas) and PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center (286 W. Lake Mead Parkway, Henderson) beginning on Friday, April 26. Special pricing will be valid through Sunday at both locations.

Gospel Music icon KIRK FRANKLIN has teamed with HOUSE OF BLUES for an ALL NEW GOSPEL BRUNCH. Kirk Franklin’s Gospel Brunch at House of Blues will be unveiled for the first time at House of Blues this Mother’s Day, May 12.  The all-you-can-eat Gospel Brunch is a non-denominational, participative celebration of gospel music to help wipe away the week’s troubles and inspire the week ahead. The ever evolving all you can eat buffet menu features southern specialties and morning feast favorites such as cornbread muffins and maple butter, Creole chicken and shrimp jambalaya, chicken and waffles, carving stations, plus create-your-own Bloody Mary and mimosa bars. GRAMMY Award-winning rapper, actor and record producer, Coolio was spotted with his friends and son at LAX Nightclub located inside Luxor Hotel & Casino. The multi-talented star spent his evening sipping on drinks and enjoying the sounds provided by resident DJ Gusto.

Also spotted at the hot spot was Seattle Seahawks Cornerback Marcus Trufant.

Celebrities and rock stars alike continue to flock to see Def Leppard’s resident show VIVA Hysteria! take over The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Music icons Billy Idol, Steve Stevens and Billy Morrison along with actor Eric Dane (former co-star of “Grey’s Anatomy” )were spotted among the audience enjoying the British rockers’ performance. Gary Payton, the NBA Champion with the 2006 Miami Heat, nine-time All Star and two-time Gold Medal winner was joined by family and friends at the new sports restaurant,  HERAEA at Palms Casino Resort to celebrate Payton's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Friday afternoon, April 5...

The stars of History Channel's hit show "Counting Cars" were spotted on track at Dream Racing, the luxury sports car racing experience at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gearing up for the premier of the show's second season, cast members Scott, Shannon, Horny Mike, Roli and Grandpa suited up in full racing gear before taking to the wheel of a fiery red fleet of Ferrari 430 Gts and showing off their skills on the race course.

TAO Group’s Seven Deadly Sins weekend celebrating seven years bringing revelry to the Las Vegas Strip kicked off at LAVO Friday night with the birthday celebration of partner Jason Strauss. Spotted toasting Strauss were Rumer Willis and Jayson Blair, Mark Salling, Wilmer Valderrama, Ben Barnes and Nicholas Hoult. Also with the group and celebrating her own birthday was Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Nina Adgal, who turned 21.

At TAO former Disney stars Drew Seeley and Lucas Grabeel were spotted in the nightclub.

The star-studded annual gala marks a night of celebration kicking off the two days of exclusive celebrity golf competition at Shadow Creek in the name of charitable fundraising.  Joseph Domingues, a Make-A-Wish “wish kid” fulfilled his dream of meeting MJ earlier in the day and was able to meet many of his idols at the event, including Michael Phelps (who gave Joseph some pointers on how to walk a red carpet), Marcus Allen, Stuart Scott, Roger Clemens, Vince Coleman, Jonathan Ogden, Ron Harper and Jerome Bettis.

Jordan sat front-and-center by the stage with fiancée Yvette Prieto, where he was joined by pal Will Smith.

The crowd also enjoyed a surprise show by Blue Man Group, who emerged from the crowd to dazzle guests with their immersive audiovisual comedy show, and a live performance by GRAMMY Award-winning artist John Legend, Comedian/singer Wayne Brady headlined entertainment for the evening Brady incorporated insider jests at various celebrities into his standup show, which was co-hosted by Jonathan Mangum.

CityCenter President & CEO Bobby Baldwin welcomed the elite crowd to ARIA Resort & Casino and introduced “His Airness.” MJ took the microphone to thank his friends, sponsors and volunteers for all of the hard work put in to make the charitable tournament a huge success.

Later in the evening, the party transformed into a pop-up nightclub with R&B, EDM and hip-hop beats spun by DJ Irie. NFL legend Jason Taylor was even spotted ascending the DJ booth to spin a few tracks for his friends.

“Glee” star Dot-Marie Jones, also known as Coach Beiste, was spotted at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at The Venetian posing with a wax figure of fellow “Glee” coach Sue Sylvester.

The figure of Sylvester, played by actress Jane Lynch, is at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas until May 31.

The Marquee Dayclub season opening kicked off with the birthday celebrations of Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal and Marquee co-founder and co-owner Jason Strauss.

Nina was joined by her friends in a cabana and danced carefree to the sounds of the EC Twins. To officially ring in her 21st birthday, the Marquee girls presented Nina a cake with a cute photo of her dog Stella.

Wilmer Valderrama, Nicholas Hoult, and Ben Barnes were also spotted celebrating in Jason Strauss' cabana.

On the other side of the pool, Marquee Dayclub first-timer, Rumer Willis was joined by boyfriend Jayson Blair to celebrate a close friend's birthday while Mark Salling hung out with his friends in the next cabana.
