Winter World Market 2009: Heat and Light at the Furniture Show
The Winter World Market has come and gone once more, showcasing innovative products that compelled your humble correspondent to cheerfully ride escalators up and down two 16 story buildings to bring you news of them.
The semi annual event brings an international clientele to Las Vegas to experience furniture trends, workshops, panels and showrooms full of the latest in home (and garden) furnishings and accessories. More than 1,500 exhibiting companies traverse 5,000,000 square feet across three buildings play host to manufacturers, retailers, interior designers, contract buyers and industry professionals. Product categories include furniture, decorative accessories, wall décor, lighting, area rugs/floor coverings, floral, tabletop, textile, bedding, mattresses, and gift.
This time around the following products distinguished themselves from among the countless offerings, both practical and decorative:
Frockz: Slipcovers for LampsWho says the old can’t look good in spandex? These decorative lampshade slipcovers hug any old lamp top, infusing it with style, color and a whole new look. With names like Crimson Dragon, Chartreuse Retro, and Pink Leopard, the covers are removable, washable, and sized to fit most lamps, whether drum or cone-shaped.
These aren’t your grandmother’s slipcovers. They’re decorative transformers taking a lamp from monstrosity to marvelous, by way of animal motifs, florals, angels, geometric angles, solids and prints. A hanging display had them presented like skirts, which makes sense. These covers are fashion for your interiors, making a big statement for a little price.
Protect-A-Bed with Miracle MembraneThis polyurethane film mattress cover allows your bed to breathe but creates a barrier to keep dust mites, bacteria and liquids out. It’s machine washable and already in use in 27 countries, including Singapore, Ecuador, and the United Kingdom. Unprotected mattresses can play host to an estimated 2 million dust mites (major cause of asthma and eczema)
Classic Flame Electric Fireplaces/Tresanti Furniture from Twin-Star International
These fireplaces require no professional installation and cost .03 per hour to run without heat, .10 per hour with heat. They can be full-size or miniature, a little larger than a jewelry box, a portable romance of soothing flames with no fumes, no mess, and no gas lines. Tresanti Furniture also offers a refrigerated wine rack at the other end of the temperature spectrum, as well as pug-and-play furniture and media consoles integrated with iPod and iPhone docking stations. These come with Monster Power surge protectors to neutralize power level surges, and eliminating dull background noise.
Bel Air Lighting
Bel Air creates the type of lighting that needs no reason to cover. Intricate glass and crystal spheres and tentacles, orbs and artistic spills please the eye aesthetically before even one electrical current runs through it. Looking like a piece of art before it’s even lit up, you can imagine the splendor when illumination takes place. Several of the chandeliers look like they belong in a palace, but Bel Air offers estate owners and apartment dwellers alike the kind of illumination that could bring even sun worshippers inside to marvel.
Whether standing on a floor, hanging from a ceiling, or hugging a lamp or a mattress, the Las Vegas World Market offers an eclectic mix of the practical, the comfortable and the downright luxurious for its discerning clientele. Aided by top professionals in the field as well as designers from every time zone and climate, home can’t help but be sweet home indeed.
