You may not think of Wet ‘n’ Wild, the new Las Vegas water park on South Fort Apache Road, as a place to watch the sun slowly set behind the mountains as dusk settles over attractions with names like Royal Flush Extreme and Hoover Half Pipe.

Even the outside is wet

Even the Outside is Wet!

You may not know that Red Rock Bay, the large wave pool, contains some of the best seats in the house as the giant movie screen flickers to life right in front of your eyes.
Lounge chairs offer a dryer, though less novel experience.  You WANT to be wet to watch.

From July 12th – August 23rd, the park has been offering Dive ‘n’ Movies, beginning at 8:00 p.m.  On Fridays and Saturdays the park is open until 10:00 p.m.  Those arriving after 5:00 p.m. can get in for the reduced priced Twilight Admission of $24.99.  No vampires allowed.

The next, and last Dive ‘n’ Movie is Rise of the Guardian (Friday, August 23rd).

Meanwhile…

There’s plenty to do during the day when the sun’s at its highest and hottest.  You can be flushed into a large bowl with centrifugal force and land in a splash pool (Royal Flush extreme).  You can go white water rafting - after a 57-foot drop - with up to three other people (Hoover Half Pipe).  You can plunge down a twisty four-story enclosed slide, complete with colorful visuals (Zip, Zap, Zoom).  Swimsuits and surfers trunks can quickly transform into thong apparel if you’re not careful – that plunge is steep!

Constrictor and Rattler

The Constrictor/Rattler

Red Rock Bay offers four-foot waves that taper off to mere ripples by the shallow end of the pool; there’s also a lounge area for sun worshippers to bask. A large bucket atop Paradise Falls periodically spills 300 gallons of water onto the multi-level complex full of interactive elements, five fun zones, and nine slides.  Not even an umbrella will protect you here.  You’re going to get wet, and from every angle.  Fair warning:  the water stays MANY degrees below air temperature.

Younger visitors can enjoy Kiddie Cove where two age appropriate slides for independent explorers and one group slide (for parent escorts) provide gentler introductions to the water for little guys and gals.  The Colorado Cooler, a veritable people soup full of transparent donuts with human filling, is 1,100 feet of winding, flowing river.  Don’t relax TOO much; there may be a waterfall or two overhead.

The Rattler is a four-person ride full of twists and turns, descending more than 360 feet to the splash down pool, but not before two “rattles” rock the group.  The Constrictor, its next door neighbor, twists like its namesake as riders attain speeds of up to 18 mph.

Desert Racers is six stories high and six lanes across, pitting guests head-first onto a downhill speedway – all 360 feet of it - at speeds of more than 20 feet-per-second. This single rider only attraction has a weight limit of 300 lbs. so if you qualify for this, you won’t be getting that free burger at Heart Attack Grill.

What is orange and can reserve your place in line without standing in line?  Xpress Brands!  They are an innovative wristband that allows guests to wait in line for slides virtually.  Once you select your desired ride from multiple self-service kiosks throughout the park, you’ll be notified (on your wristband) of the wait time and when it is time to return to the attraction.  A $5.00 per band refundable deposit is required.

The food is kid friendly and “cool.”  There’s soft-serve ice cream, Dippin’ Dots, and shaved ice.  Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, fries, and chicken tenders tempt the crowds to nosh before navigating the waters yet again.

And of course, lots of liquids to wet your whistle as you whiz, whirlpool, and wander your way through Wet ‘n’ Wild.
