M Resort Recognizes Holiday of Chanukah with Menorah Lighting

The M Resort reached out to locals and tourists of the Jewish faith on Friday afternoon, December 11th with the lighting of a huge menorah in the lobby area of the hotel and casino.

Rabbi Sanford Akselrad and Cantor Philip Goldstein of Congregation Ner Tamid joined visitors to the resort in reciting the prayers and lighting the menorah. They were aided by Victoria Shinar, 7 ½, of Las Vegas.

The M was well prepared for the attending crowd with a number of the customary components of a Chanukah celebration - small chocolate coins commonly referred to as Chanukah gelt, sugar cookies in the shape of Jewish stars, and dreidels which are spinning tops that families play with during the holiday.

Chanukah, referred to as the “Festival of Lights,” is commemorated by lighting a candle each night for eight nights on a special candelabra known as a menorah. Candles are lit using one candle known as the Shamash or servant. It is a remembrance of the ancient victory of a band of Jewish rebels against the occupying forces who had outlawed Judaism and profaned the Temple in Jerusalem. The lighting of the candles for eight nights recalls what is believed to be a miracle when a meager amount of oil in the Temple’s candlelabra burned for eights days and nights until more could be obtained.

The menorah was displayed through the eight nights of the Jewish holiday. The M Resort Spa Casino is located at 12300 Las Vegas Blvd S at St. Rose Parkway.

Zowie Bowie Continues at Monte Carlo

Vintage Vegas Show Recalls old Glamour Days

It’s taken me almost three months to finally get to see Vintage Vegas, the Zowie Bowie show at the Lance Burton Theater in the Monte Carlo. If you loved the Vegas shows of years ago or just want to see what it was like, then hurry down to the Monte Carlo and catch this classic, sophisticated show on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m.

It’s not often that you can enjoy such talented performers as they pay tribute to the music and styles of Frank Sinatra, Steve and Eydie, or Bobby Darin. It’s less often that you can hear some of the old standards done by a 15 piece orchestra.

Chris Phillips and Marley Taylor who together make up Zowie Bowie are all about style and grace in this tribute to the old days. Their repertoire includes Hello Dolly, Heaven, I’ve Got A Crush On You, and Diana Ross’s classic, Touch me in the Morning.

But be warned, Chris and Marley won’t be touching in the morning. The pair who were engaged for eight years are no longer a pair off stage. However, the magic is still there onstage.

When I saw the production, J. Boogie showed off some incredible dancing skills during his cameo appearance.

I was told that Vintage Vegas has been extended at least through January, so hurry up to the Monte Carlo to enjoy this act.

And after the show, go over to Brand Lounge where you can meet Chris and Marley as well as enjoying entertainers such as Carmine Mandia and Lionardo. You never know who will show up there to take the mike.

Las Vegas Hosts 27,000 Runners in Rock N Roll Marathon

You’re not likely to ever find me running in a marathon, but for the past few years my husband and I have been volunteers at the Las Vegas marathon registration. This year surpassed all other years in volume and excitement.

More than 27,000 runners signed up for either the full or ½ marathon. They came in all ages and sizes and from all over the US and abroad. . The atmosphere at the Mandalay Bay registration area and expo on Saturday, December 5 was upbeat, carnival style.

After registration closed, I had the opportunity to join about 2,000 of the runners at their Pasta Dinner. I was amazed at how quickly everyone got in and went through the buffet lines at Mandalay Bay to fill their plates with a tasty salad, a selection of four pastas and sauces, and bread or rolls.

Robin Leach was on hand to MC the Elvis karaoke contest. I asked him what brought him to the marathon on a Saturday night when so much else was going on in the city.

“I’ve been involved with the marathon since it first came here,” he told me. “This is the first rock n roll marathon here and I am pleased to be able to participate in something like this to bring tourists to Las Vegas. This could be the biggest weekend ever in Las Vegas with the rodeo, the marathon, Metallica, and Nascar. And we have handled it well and with grace.”

The next morning, thousands ran, thousands watched and cheered, and Las Vegas once again came out a winner.
