2017 World Series of Poker Passes Halfway Point at Rio

The famed World Series of Poker (WSOP) is underway at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Players have flocked to the Rio hoping to make their mark and claim prizes and bragging rights by winning one of the many tournaments currently being played in the ballrooms of the hotel.

For poker players, it is an opportunity to try turn their skills into cash, for others, to be up close to poker heroes. For tourists who aren't poker players, it is a chance to see a mammouth event with hundred of players coming and going at any point in the day.

By mid point in the WSOP, a record 61,616 entries had been tabulated. Close to 100 countries are represented.

The WSOP is the largest, richest and most prestigious gaming event in the world awarding millions of dollars in prize money and the prestigious gold bracelet, globally recognized as the sport's top prize. Featuring a comprehensive slate of tournaments in every major poker variation, the WSOP is poker's longest running tournament in the world, dating back to 1970. It is sponsored by the Caesars Entertainment Corporation

The Final Table of the WSOP with its $10,000 buy in begins on Saturday July 8. On July 17, play halts for two days and resumes on Thursday, July 20 with the the nine top players. It will be covered on ESPN.

In 2016, the event attracted 107,833 entrants from 107 different countries to the Rio in Las Vegas and awarded over $221 million in prize money.  In addition, the WSOP has formed groundbreaking alliances in broadcasting, digital media and corporate sponsorships, while successfully expanding the brand internationally with the advent in 2007 of the World Series of Poker Europe.
