BBR Wins Accolades at Showcase at Boulevard Theater

BBR is not an it, it is a they, and they are here to stay. BBR stands for a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead. They are three women, tremendously talented individually, now united into a group that I predict will have a presence in Las Vegas in years to come.

The trio opened their April 2 showcase at the Boulevard Theater with a spirited version of "Are You Ready For A Miracle?" It takes almost a miracle to “make it” in this town, but these women have looks, talent, and the affection of the entertainment industry behind them.

The group was conceived by the blonde, Anne Martinez, who quickly identified brunette Savannah Smith from Vegas! The Show as a good singing partner.

Finding the redhead, she thought, might be a challenge. Then she saw Tara Palsha, the incredible lead dancer in Vegas! The Show. Who knew that the dancer could sing!  Add Director/Choreographer Tim Bennett and Creative and Musical Director Jimmy Lockett to the mix and you've got a recipe for success. Lockett provides transition time with bits of humor and reminds us to “Don't Forget The Blues.”

This showcase was not one of those singers and keyboard events. BBR - A Blonde, A Brunette, and A Redhead was a full blown production with seven musicians including noted Trumpeter David Perrico, five male dancers, and special guests Bella Strings. The costuming and choreography are first class. The lighting contributes to the high quality of the overall production.

Each woman showed cased her talent alone and throughout the evening the trio entertained the full house with their suave, sophiticated and yes, sexy songs and moves. From “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” to “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” these women delighted the audience.

Anne Martinez led off the solo performances and set the bar high. All three have bodies to die for and looks to match and they use all their resources to full advantage.

Anytime Tara Palsha dances, there's going to be a happy audience. Her song and dance showcase piece “Thirteen Men and Me the Only Gal in Town” was done in 1962 by Ann Margaret. Tara brings that same raw sexuality and talent to the number and I was not surprised to find that Tiger Martina (Vegas! The Show) had a part to play in that number's choreography. And you have to love a tall beautiful woman like Savannah Smith doing a drum solo.

BBR 2

According to Martinez, “It's vintage with a modern twist. We mix pop, soul, and cabaret music, all with tight harmonies.” How right she is. And how right this group is for the entertainment capitol of the world. Keep your eyes and ears open for more from BBR. If you'd like to see what I'm talking about. Opportunity Village is Winner as Recipient of Celebrity Poker Tournament

And the winner was..... someone who prefers to remain anonymous. Yes, the winner of the 8th annual Celebrity Poker Tournament to support Opportunity Village on Saturday, April 6 in the Caesars Palace Poker Room apparently prefers to remain nameless. The winner will receive a seat in the 2013 World Series of Poker and I have been informed has pledged to donate 20% of any winnings to Opportunity Village, a local Las Vegas charity. Sounds like a win-win to me.

The annual event draws many local celebrities to support this Las Vegas local charity. This year's celebrities icluded All-Star Apprentice contestant Omarosa Manigault, ballroom dancer Lacey Schwimmer, and model and Playmate Claire Sinclair.

I stopped by the event just after members of Rock of Ages, now playing in Vegas, were eliminated. The only professional poker players remaining in the tournament, Melissa Hayden and Andy Bloch, were preparing to leave the room. I asked Melissa about her participation. She told me that she participates in three or four charity supported tournaments.

This charity is supported 100% by people in our community,” she told me. She continuted to educate me a bit saying that it is Las Vegas' favorite charity. “It's a day facility and people give there back to the community. They earn a wage.” She also suggested I stop by their thrift shop as apparently people of means donate beautiful merchandize to the facility.”

Kudos to Emily Jillette, wife of Penn Jillette, who made it to 12th place in the tournament. Penn is appearing on Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice to raise funds for Opportunity Village.

Robert Davi and Don Rickles: Two Good Reasons to Visit the Orleans This Week-end

It's been too long since Robert Davi was in town.  I saw him in a show entitled   Davi Sings Sinatra On the Road to Romance.  Yes, he’s the guy best know from Goonies , but his first passion was singing.  I’m delighted that he occasionally shares that talent with us.

Those of us who enjoyed Sinatra will  appreciate the tribute to the talent of Sinatra and the music of another time that Davi delivers.  He connects with his audience, bringing us along on a nostalgic musical journey delivered with reverence and style. I closed my eyes and felt like The Chairman of the Board was channeling through the tuxedo clad Davi as he entertained us backed by a 20 piece orchestra.  Old style entertainment. wonderful.  He is at the Orleans on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14 sharing the bill with the one of a kind Don Rickles.  Don and Davi.  Two good reasons to go.
