Hussong's Cantina Review – Mexican Eatery opens at Boca Fashion Park in Northwest Las Vegas

Drink and dine inside or al fresco -- in the open air

The street style corn at Hussong's Cantina was so unique and delicious that I asked for more and I would have sampled several more of the Margaritas but I was driving.

The menu at Hussong's Cantina says “Eat Well, Drink Better, make History.” Hussong's Cantina found the recipe for success and they are running with it. The newest location of this Mexican food and drink establishment in Boca Park is designed to provide the ambience of the Mandalay Bay location with a pared down menu and full service bar for fast casual service.

The eatery which opened its first US location five years ago at the Shoppes at Mandalay Bay is noted for its Margaritas and Baja Style Mexican food. Margaritas that are hand shaken and made fresh are the featured product of the restaurant and the main bar is its focal point.

Legend has it that the original margarita was invented in October of 1941 by Hussong's bartender Don Carlos Orozco at Hussong’s in Baja, California.   He concocted what Hussong's calls, “the perfect mixture of equal parts tequila, Damiana and lime”, served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass, for a beautiful woman named Margarita Henkel who frequented the bar, and who was the daughter of the German Ambassador to Mexico.

The Original Margarita!

Hussong’s original margarita won the Best of Vegas 2015 award for the best margarita in Las Vegas. I attended the opening of the original Hussong’s in Las Vegas and have visited it several times since.  So I was looking forward to seeing what the 3,250 square foot location in Boca Park had to offer.

A Casual Vibe

The day I visited was perfect for those who want to enjoy open air dining and drinking. Parking right in front makes it an easy access location.

Eleven different margaritas are listed on the menu along with variety of tequilas. I consumed the Original Margarita which is made from Sausa Blue Reposado tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice and agave syrup.  The drink went down so fast that I decided to sample the Lychee margarita.  It had a unique flavor and is made from El Jimador Reposado tequila, lychee fruit, pineapple and a hint of cinnamon.  I would have tasted more, but our time was limited before I had to get back behind the wheel of the car.

Hussong's has a variety of Mexican beers on tap

There are some folks that visit a Mexican restaurant and do not consume tequila drinks. They can have their choice of a variety of other spirits, Mexican beers on tap, sangria, wine, soft drinks and of course water.

Man does not live by tequila alone and Hussong’s offers a simple casual menu.  Tacos are the featured item with 13 different varieties offered.  These are not your basic street tacos, but what we would call upgrades of the basic product.  We sampled nearly all the tacos on the menu, and will describe a few.

Carnitas and Baja Shrimp tacos
The ribeye taco and shrooms taco

The shrooms taco made with beer battered Portobello mushrooms, yogurt sauce, kale, habanera rings, and parmesan cheese was a unique combination and flavorful taste.

The steak tacos contained steak, roasted pepper sauce, tomatillo-avocado sauce, onion, cilantro, and queso fresco.  My favorite was the Baja shrimp taco made with beer battered shrimp, tomatilo-avocado sauce, chipotle atoli, cabbage mix, habenero pickled onions, and micro greens.

Who ever heard of a “fried avocado” taco? It's made with breaded avocado, sriacha aioli, caesar salad and parmesan cheese. Unique and delicious. Yes, we ate too much.

The tacos are served two at a time on a plate that contains white cilantro rice and borracho pinto beans ($9.95).  You can add an order of bottomless chips and salsa to the order ($1.95) and street style corn ($4.95).

Street Style Corn

The Street Style Corn is grilled and then coated with cheese and salt for a unusual treat. When you visit Hussong's Cantina, be sure to try this surprising flavorful item. Burritos, soup, salads and nachos are also on the menu. As a carnivorous eater, I didn't go there, but the menu does mention “Vegan? Lettuce know!”

Hussong’s features a 3:00 PM to 7: 00 PM happy hour on Monday to Thursday and 3:00 PM to 6: 00 PM on Friday and Sunday.  Original margaritas and most drinks are half price.  It’s a good time to relax with a huge plate of nachos and some original margaritas.
